Evaluation playbook

A journeyman's certificate confirms a passed exam, not automatically Elektrofachkraft status under DGUV Vorschrift 3 — that depends on demonstrated practical experience. The process below is deliberately lean on the number of conversations, but includes a practical skills test that no amount of paperwork review can replace.

  1. Stage 1: Reviewing applications and credentials

    First check the formal proof: journeyman's certificate (Gesellenbrief), vocational school report, any certificates for additional qualifications (photovoltaics, EV charging infrastructure), Class B driving licence. Pay attention to how long they stayed with previous employers — several moves within a year is a warning sign, leaving an insolvent or shrinking business isn't — and to their previous area of focus (new-build, refurbishment, industrial, building services), since it rarely transfers one to one.

  2. Stage 2: Phone screen (15-20 minutes)

    Clarify four things: (1) since when, and to what extent, they've worked independently without supervision, (2) what type of systems and jobs they've mostly handled, (3) availability for on-call duty or customer visits outside core hours, if relevant, (4) salary expectations in hourly wage, not annual salary. An open conversation about the hourly rate at this stage saves both sides disappointment later.

  3. Stage 3: Structured technical interview (45-60 minutes)

    Work through the 15 questions below, focusing on the technical and situational ones: they show far more reliably than the CV whether someone actually applies standards like DIN VDE 0100 and 0105-100 or only knows them by name. Having someone with an Elektrofachkraft background on the panel gives a much sharper signal here than an HR-only conversation.

  4. Stage 4: On-site practical skills test (2-3 hours)

    The most effective filter for this role: a real or realistic task observed by an experienced professional, for example fault-finding on a prepared circuit or a small installation task done to a plan.
