A European company opening its first UK role usually asks which British job boards to add. The more useful question is narrower: which parts of the posting stack you already run stop working at the Channel, and the answer is encouragingly few.
The gap is two suppliers wide
Most of what a German, Dutch or French posting setup does carries over untouched. The aggregators are international by construction, the two largest job platforms in the world are not country products, and Google for Jobs indexes structured postings wherever they sit.
What does not carry over is the UK’s own commercial layer. Two of the boards a British recruiter would name first are not part of a continental stack and are not bought through one, and a plan that assumes otherwise discovers it after the first posting cycle rather than before.
So the work is not “research the UK market”. It is: run what you already run, then decide deliberately about two suppliers.
The method
Start with what already reaches the UK. Indeed and LinkedIn carry no country-specific contract, so a UK role reaches them exactly as a German one does. Google for Jobs picks up a correctly marked-up posting from your careers page without a commercial relationship at all. Talent.com aggregates across 78 countries and the UK is one of them. None of this needs a decision; it needs your existing setup pointed at a British vacancy.
Add the one UK generalist that books like the others. Totaljobs is a British generalist with a UK-only contract — the one native UK board that sits inside the same posting flow as the rest of your stack rather than beside it. If you want a British-audience board without opening a new supplier relationship, that is the one.
Then decide about Reed and CV-Library. Reed and CV-Library are two of the largest British job boards, and both are bought directly rather than through a multiposting flow. For a first UK hire that is usually fine to defer. For a team hiring into the UK at any volume, it is a supplier conversation to have on purpose, at the point where the reach you are missing costs more than the admin of a second account.
What it costs
The honest accounting has two parts.
The first is that a UK stack assembled this way has a visible gap in the middle of it, and pretending otherwise would be the error. The continental channels plus Totaljobs will fill many roles. They will not give you the coverage a British recruiter would describe as complete, and if your UK hiring becomes a programme rather than an exception, the direct relationships are the next step.
The second is simpler and usually forgotten. British job titles are not translated German ones — “Sachbearbeiter” has no clean English equivalent, salaries are quoted annually and gross, and a posting that reads as a translated job description performs worse than a shorter one written for the market. That costs nothing to fix and is more often the reason a first UK posting underperforms than the board list is.
Disclosure, because it shapes the list above: we sell recruitment software, and the boards linked to their own profile pages here are ones a posting reaches through it. Reed and CV-Library are not, which is exactly why they are named rather than quietly left out. A guide that only lists what its author sells is a price list with headings.
