An empty application inbox does not tell you what to change. The ad may be awaiting approval, reaching the wrong people, or sending interested candidates to a form that does not work on their phone. Find the earliest point you can verify before buying more exposure.
| What you can observe | Evidence to check | Possible explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| No public ad | Publication status and direct listing link | Review, expiry, or missing account information | Resolve the status with the board |
| Ad is live, few recorded views | Reporting period, location, title, and chosen channel | Limited reach or a poor audience match | Check distribution and search terms |
| Views, few completed applications | The offer and the application journey | Unclear conditions or friction after the click | Read the ad and test the form on mobile |
| Applications, little relevant experience | Essential requirements and source of each application | Broad targeting or an unclear role | Revisit the requirements and channel mix |
These are hypotheses. A blank report can mean unavailable tracking, and a small sample cannot prove which explanation is correct.
Confirm that the vacancy is visible
Open the listing through the employer account or its direct link. Check the title, workplace, application destination, and any pending action. Keep a note of the observation time so you do not compare today’s publication status with last week’s application count.
Indeed’s visibility guidance warns that searching for your own ad can mislead: results are personalised. Its employer account and company-page checks are better starting points. The linked guidance is for its US help centre; check the equivalent instructions for your account’s market.
An ad being live does not show whether suitable candidates are seeing it. For a site-based role, check the town and commuting expectations. For a remote role, state where the person may work. A creative internal title can also hide an otherwise relevant vacancy from someone looking for a familiar occupation.
Inspect what happens after the click
Read the ad without filling in details from your own knowledge. Can a candidate identify the work, pay range, hours, location, and essential experience? A restaurant vacancy with unspecified shifts leaves a decision unresolved before the person reaches the application form. A technically clear ad can still describe an unattractive offer.
Use the existing job-ad writing guide when the content needs a rewrite. For distribution, choose a market first: our Germany guide serves a different hiring task from the Spain guide. Language alone does not establish the hiring country.
Next, follow the actual application link on a phone. Inspect required fields, file upload, account creation, and error messages. Test submission in a preview or an authorised test flow, keeping test records out of recruitment reports. W3C’s form guidance explains why clear labels and understandable feedback matter.
If your system measures starts and completions, compare them over the same period for the same vacancy. If it does not, record what you can inspect manually. Check whether the report counts total views or unique viewers; a click on an application button is not a submitted application.
If applications arrive but few meet the requirements, review a sample against the same essential criteria. Separate skills needed on the first day from those you can teach. Check that screening questions match the ad and that a preferred qualification has not become an automatic rejection. Compare the source of unsuitable applications before removing a channel.
When more reach is the right move
Extra distribution is reasonable when the ad is accessible, the offer is clear, and your current channels miss the people you need. It is less useful when every additional visitor meets the same broken upload field or unsuitable shift pattern. XING’s guidance for smaller employers discusses both visibility and the attractiveness of the offer.
Join sells distribution and hiring software, so our recommendation has a commercial interest. Our position is to repair an observable obstacle before paying to send more people through it. Multiposting can then distribute the ad to eligible boards; availability depends on the vacancy, market, and account. It cannot change the salary you offer or make an essential qualification optional.
For a vacancy ready for distribution, try Join free. Check the available channels before selecting any optional paid placement. The job-ad cost guide separates that spend from the software subscription.
Choose the next check, then compare
- Confirm the public listing and resolve any publication issue.
- Ask someone outside the hiring team to explain the job’s conditions after reading the ad.
- Check the application journey on a phone and record any obstruction.
- Change the most plausible cause, recording the date and what changed.
- Compare the following period using the same definitions, including relevance of applications.
For scarce skills, low response may also require a different offer or direct outreach. Do not keep adding advertising spend solely because a vacancy remains open.
