Spot the difference

Writing a job ad is hard work, especially if you’re not too familiar with the job role yourself. What’s the difference between a Legal Advisor, a Paralegal, and a Legal Secretary, anyway? How does a GDPR Data Protection Officer differ from a Risk Manager? By knowing the differences in tasks and responsibilities you have a higher chance of creating a job ad that attracts the best talent for your job.

In short, Legal Advisors give companies legal advice, Legal Secretaries perform administrative tasks, and Paralegals support lawyers. A Risk Manager calculates (and reduces) business risk and a GDPR Data Protection Officer ensures a company complies with data protection regulations.

  • A Legal Advisor (sometimes called a Legal Counsel or Consultant) provides general legal advice to clients and companies. This includes performing legal tasks such as drafting employment agreements, overseeing legal matters during an office rebuild, or dealing with employee harassment suits.
  • Legal Secretaries generally work for lawyers at legal firms where they perform administrative and clerical tasks. Greeting clients, taking phone calls, and scheduling appointments are all included in their list of responsibilities.
  • Paralegals are more directly involved in the legal processes that lawyers deal with. They assist lawyers by conducting legal research, holding witness interviews, and writing opening statements for the lawyer to present in court.
  • A Risk Manager works at an organisation to identify potential risks to the business and to find ways to manage, reduce, and prevent further risk.
  • GDPR Data Protection Officers are solely focused on ensuring a company complies with the regulations stipulated by the EU GDPR and similar data protection legislation.

  • Be clear in your description. Know the tasks of the role and ideally who the candidate should be.
  • This means you won’t need to read through too many CVs to find your superstar.
  • You might be tempted to use bullet points in this section, but resist the urge! Tell a story, show off all the cool things they would be responsible for, and get them excited to apply.
  • You should be more focused on your company culture and what your mission is, instead of their daily tasks.
