Spot the difference

Writing a job ad is hard work, especially if you’re not too familiar with the job role yourself. What’s the difference between a Legal Secretary and a Paralegal, anyway? Don’t a Risk Manager and GDPR Data Protection Officer do practically the same tasks? Although these jobs might have similar responsibilities it’s important you know the differences between them. This way, you have a higher chance of getting the job ad right and attracting the best talent for your job.

In short, a Legal Secretary provides administrative assistance to lawyers while a Paralegal helps them prepare for trial. A Risk Manager assesses (and reduces) business risk while a GDPR Data Protection Officer ensures data legislation compliance. The Legal Advisor provides general legal assistance to clients and companies.

  • Legal Secretaries (sometimes called Legal Assistants) assist lawyers with administrative and office management tasks. They provide support in a variety of ways, from screening potential clients to producing legal documents.
  • Paralegals also support lawyers, but their tasks are generally less of an administrative/clerical nature. Instead, they assist with pre-trial preparations and, therefore, need a firm understanding of the law as well as impeccable research skills.
  • Risk Managers are tasked with the identification and assessment of potential risks to a business, as well as the subsequent implementation of the right strategies and processes to reduce future risk.
  • GDPR Data Protection Officers ensure your business complies with data protection and privacy legislation as set out in the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar regulations.
  • A Legal Advisor supports a business with a variety of legal matters. This can include anything from helping resolve employee disputes to creating legal documents.

Need inspiration?

Your job description will not attract talent all on its own. So when putting together your job post, be sure to show what it's like working at your company not just textually but visually!

  • Remember, attracting a candidate is just as much about your company culture as the job role itself. Make sure to include points that make you seem desirable too!
  • Add photos that show off your office space, team events and your team having a great time.
  • Maybe you could include a video of some team members explaining why they love coming to work, or why they like their role.
  • Include a grid of attractive perks with some nice illustrations. Maybe you have unlimited holidays, or you have an attractive parental leave cover - show off!
  • Why not embed your company's Instagram feed to give a IRL overview of the day-to-day.
