Spot the difference

If you’ve been tasked with writing a job advert for a role you’re not an expert in, it can feel like quite a challenge. What are the differences between a Front End and Back End Developer, for example? What does a Web Developer do that a Full Stack Developer doesn’t?

To summarise: a Front End Developer works on the side of a site or software that a user will see, whereas a Back End Developer will work ‘behind the scenes.’ A Full Stack Developer will work on both the front and back end of the product and a Web Developer focuses on coding web applications or pages.

  • A Front End Developer works closely with CSS, HTML and Java coding languages in order to create a user-friendly website or software that looks and performs well. Their tasks will include optimising web pages, debugging user-facing interfaces and working closely with design teams.
  • A Back End Developer will work more with server-side scripting languages like PHP and Python. They’ll work on the none user-facing side of a project and will often build and maintain code to keep a web application running correctly. They’ll also be debugging experts!
  • A Full Stack Developer will be fluent in a number of coding languages from both the user and system sides. They work on both the front and back of the site of software and will therefore often be a means of communication between designers and programmers.
  • Web Developers are coding experts specifically in web applications and websites. They’ll work on many web-related projects such as optimising pages for load speed and increasing site capacity.

  • Be clear in your description. Know the tasks of the role and ideally who the candidate should be.
  • This means you won’t need to read through too many CVs to find your superstar.
  • You might be tempted to use bullet points in this section, but resist the urge! Tell a story, show off all the cool things they would be responsible for, and get them excited to apply.
  • You should be more focused on your company culture and what your mission is, instead of their daily tasks.

  • This would waste both your time and the potential candidate so avoid being wordy as much as possible. Think about what would be an essential part of this role, and what would the applicant need to be successful in the job?

• Proven experience working on the Front End Development side of a software or site.
• Good understanding of design lexicon and wireframes.
• Fluency in Javascript, CSS and HTML.
