What kind of designs or artists influence your work?
Here you’re mostly looking for passion and an open mind, they should be excited by the artists or designers that inspire them, it will also give you an idea of their personality and style.
What has been your biggest design challenge?
Highlights a candidate’s ability to work under pressure, and the types of tasks they can realistically manage.
What is your favourite design piece from your portfolio and why?
This should be a fun one for the candidate to answer, it will give you a better understanding of them as a person and the way they think or rationalise.
Soft Skills
How do you keep up with digital design trends and improve your design knowledge?
Good designers will always be looking to improve their skills and learn more about upcoming industry trends to stay ahead of the curve for their clients or company’s.
What kind of management style and teams do you prefer to work with?
This is a cultural fit question and designed so you can get an idea on if they will gel well with the other people already in your design team.
What is your creative process?
Here you’re looking for a lot of creativity, but also not just the end deliverable. Can they also strategise, work on ideation, and execute good ideas?
Hard Skills
In digital design, what is the meaning of colour theory?
Gives a good idea of candidates basic design knowledge, this should be an easy question for them to answer.
What design softwares do you have most experience using?
Photoshop, InDesign, Sketch and UXPin are useful tools. Animation, video and illustration skills would also be a plus.
Could you walk me through your approach to design?
Great designers will have a structure, they should get input from different stakeholders and ask lots of questions to better meet their briefs.
Operational / Situational Questions
What do you think makes a great digital marketing campaign?
This will give you an idea of their general working methods, if their inspiration matches your branding and how they’ll organise themselves.
What do you like about our company’s digital design and what things would you like to change?
This lets you know if they can think quickly on their feet and be creative in the moment, maybe they already did some research and thought about putting their individuality on the company brand.
How did you design your portfolio?
This question is great to get to know how much UX experience a candidate has. It’s great if they can walk you through their reasoning behind the layout and organisation of their portfolio webpage.
