Interviews naturally breed nerves, so the first part of your interview should aim to make the candidate feel comfortable speaking with you, you’ll get much more information out of them and a better sense of the person they are if they feel like they can trust the environment they are in.

A positive opener to start
What do you enjoy most about your job?
In what way do you see your career progressing?
Behavioral Questions
Can you talk about the best piece of writing you’ve done so far? Why do you like it so much?
What are some of your favourite magazines or blogs? What do you like about them?
Again, a personality based question, there’s no correct answer but will give you an indication of style.
What are some brands or advertising campaigns that inspire you to write better copy?
Good candidates will have a few different brands to talk about and aspire to be better.
How do you deal with writer’s block? Do you have a process?
This should be a familiar question to copywriters, a good candidate will have a good idea of what techniques work for them to get them out of the block.
Soft Skills
How do you keep improving your writing skills?
A good candidate will have a passion for learning and often try to improve their copywriting.
Do you have experience working with different stakeholders and teams before?
It would be ideal if the candidate has great communication skills and can work together with multiple people and departments at once. Their answer should also display some time management and organisational skills.
What do you think is the most important part of good copy?
Content should be actionable and practical, it should be easy to understand what to do next from the customers perspective. It should also be somewhat unique and aim to generate more traffic.
Hard Skills
What kinds of copywriting work have you done in the past? Which pieces of work did you enjoy the most?
Shows familiarity with different copy types and displays the ability to write in different scenarios and contexts.
Can you tell me about your copywriting process?
Any good candidate should be able to talk about their general process for writing content including stakeholder conversations, research and the writing and editing process.
How do you usually approach writing about a subject that is unfamiliar to you?
Should display a clear understanding of an extensive research process and understanding different audiences. Ideally they will talk about writing long form content which includes conducting interviews and collecting relevant data.
What are some ways you usually optimise your copy for SEO purposes?
A good candidate doesn’t need to be an SEO expert, but they should be aware of its importance and understand why it’s relevant.
Operational / Situational Questions
Could you tell me about a time that you successfully completed a project? How did you define that success?
Should easily recall an example and describe their approach in detail. A good candidate will be able to give KPIs and data that showed it was a success.
During a feedback round, if you received more revisions and comments than you were expecting how would you deal with that?
It can be challenging to edit several times when a copywriter puts a lot of work into a piece and it keeps getting revised. A good candidate will be able to take criticism and read between the lines of a stakeholders assignment.
