Spot the difference

Writing a job ad takes time and effort, especially if you’re writing about a role that you’re not that familiar with. Do you know the difference between a Risk Manager and a GDPR Data Protection Officer? How about the different responsibilities of a Paralegal versus those of a Legal Secretary? Make sure your job ad speaks to the right audience so you attract the right talent.

In short; Risk Managers assess a company’s risk, while GDPR Data Protection Officers focus on compliance with data protection legislation. Legal Secretaries provide administrative support to lawyers, while Paralegals help lawyers prepare for trials. Legal Advisors assist companies with general legal advice such as drafting employee contracts.

  • A Risk Manager is tasked with the identification, control, and reduction of the risks a company faces. From financial to legal risks, the Risk Manager researches and assesses the many types of risks involved in running a business to set out strategies and define clear processes to reduce such risks in the future.
  • GDPR Data Protection Officers help a company comply with data regulations as set out in national and international legislation, in particular the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
  • A Legal Secretary tends to work for one or more lawyers, helping them with administrative tasks. This often includes tasks such as communicating with clients or transcribing meetings.
  • Paralegals are slightly different in that they help lawyers with the many preparations needed before going to trial, such as studying specific laws or researching case files. As such, Paralegals are more involved in the legal process than Legal Secretaries.
  • A Legal Advisor assists a company or client with legal matters and advice. This can be in the form of overseeing contractual agreements between parties or assisting companies with internal disputes.

Need inspiration?

Your job description will not attract talent all on its own. So when putting together your job post, be sure to show what it's like working at your company not just textually but visually!

  • Remember, attracting a candidate is just as much about your company culture as the job role itself. Make sure to include points that make you seem desirable too!
  • Add photos that show off your office space, team events and your team having a great time.
  • Maybe you could include a video of some team members explaining why they love coming to work, or why they like their role.
  • Include a grid of attractive perks with some nice illustrations. Maybe you have unlimited holidays, or you have an attractive parental leave cover - show off!
  • Why not embed your company's Instagram feed to give a IRL overview of the day-to-day.
