Tasks

Internship Project Title:

“Bankable Solar: Financial Modeling of Rooftop and Utility-Scale Solar Projects”

Project Objective:

To enable students to learn and apply the concepts of solar project financial modeling through hands-on exercises, using MS Excel or Google Sheets. The internship guides them to build, analyze, and present a financial model for a rooftop or ground-mounted solar power project.

Prerequisite:

Students must complete our beginner + intermediate financial modeling video series, which includes:

  • CAPEX & OPEX structuring
  • Loan modeling
  • Depreciation
  • IRR, NPV, and Payback Period
  • Sensitivity analysis
  • Tariff modeling (for C&I or residential)

    Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the economics behind solar project development
  • Build a project cash flow model from scratch
  • Evaluate profitability using IRR, NPV, LCOE
  • Perform sensitivity analysis on key variables (CAPEX, tariffs, interest, etc.)
  • Prepare investment pitches or client-ready financial summaries

    Core Project Activities:

1. Model Building Foundation

  • Watch our video course to learn the step-by-step modeling structure
  • Rebuild the base financial model from scratch or using your given template

2. Case Study Project Selection

Students choose one of the following to simulate:

  • A 100 kW C&I rooftop system for a factory
  • A 10 kW residential rooftop system under PM Surya Ghar scheme
  • A 1 MW ground-mounted solar plant for utility sale

They collect or assume:

  • Solar generation (from PVsyst or standard yield values)
  • Cost breakdowns (CAPEX/OPEX)
  • Loan terms (tenor, interest, moratorium)
  • Tariff or savings
  • Depreciation method & tax rates

3. Cash Flow & Financing

  • Create year-wise cash flow over 25 years
  • Model:
  • Debt-Equity ratio
  • EMI schedules
  • Depreciation (WDB/SLM)
  • Taxes, loan interest, and principal repayment
  • Calculate IRR (Equity & Project), NPV, Payback, DSCR, LCOE

4. Sensitivity Analysis

  • Evaluate how changes in CAPEX, tariff, or interest rate impact IRR
  • Show results in a tornado chart or data table

5. Dashboard & Pitch

  • Create a simple dashboard:
  • Key metrics (IRR, Payback, LCOE, Equity requirement)
  • Cash flow graph
  • Assumptions tab
  • Prepare a 5-slide pitch deck to present the project financially

    Final Deliverables:

  1. Excel/Google Sheet Financial Model (with assumptions, formulas)
  2. 5–8 Page Summary Report (PDF)
  3. Investor Pitch Deck (PPT)
  4. Optional: Video walk-through of their model

    Duration:

3–4 or 4-6 weeks or as per required by student.

Requirements

Eligible Students:

  • Bachelors/ Masters (Electrical, Energy, Mechanical, Civil)
  • MBA/BBA (Finance, Energy, Infrastructure)
  • Commerce/Finance (CA Inter, CFA L1, B.Com, M.Com)
  • BSc/MSc (Energy Studies, Sustainable Development)

    Tools Required:

  • MS Excel or Google Sheets (mandatory)
  • Optional: Access to PVsyst or solar yield calculators
  • Internet for your video training

Industry Mentor/guide will be provided throughout internship
