Mission of the Position
The Head of BESS drives the development and execution of Germany’s BESS strategy, ensuring technically sound, economically viable, and fully approved projects. Acting as the central coordinator, the role aligns cross-functional teams, regulatory authorities, and stakeholders to deliver ready-to-build BESS projects that support the company’s renewable energy growth objectives. This position will report directly to the CEO in Austria.
Tasks
- Develop and implement the BESS strategy, aligning with company objectives and market demands.
- Manage the full development lifecycle of BESS projects, including feasibility studies, permitting, environmental reviews, and community engagement.
- Specify suitable grid connection points for BESS based on technical and economic considerations in collaboration with our Grid Expert.
- Build expertise in all necessary regulatory procedures to achieve construction-ready approvals for BESS projects.
- Oversee project budgets, forecasts, and financial health, preparing regular reports and building business cases in collaboration with Finance (e.g., power traders).
- Design the technical specifications of BESS systems in collaboration with the Head of Engineering.
- Coordinate land securing in collaboration with the Development and GIS teams.
- Navigate and ensure adherence to local and international regulations, securing necessary permits and approvals.
- Assist with grid capacity requests from operators to obtain connection conditions and costs.
- Negotiate optimal grid connection conditions with internal and external experts.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including grid operators, landowners, and regulatory authorities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Technology, Renewable Energies, or comparable field.
- Minimum of 10 years in energy infrastructure development, with at least 3–5 years in utility-scale BESS development.
- Strong understanding of battery technologies (e.g., lithium-ion), storage applications, interconnection processes, and market participation.
- Structured, analytical mindset with flexibility to respond to changing challenges and a proactive attitude toward taking responsibility.
- Professional experience in BESS project development with a strong network of contacts.
- Proven ability to lead complex projects from conception through to completion, managing multiple high-value projects simultaneously.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, capable of interfacing with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Fluent in German and English (written and spoken).
- Willingness to travel frequently and work independently with a diligent, structured approach.
