About the role.
The Utilities & Facilities Manager leads the strategy, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of all utility systems and site infrastructure—including refrigeration, water, gas, compressed air, HVAC, steam, energy recovery, water treatment, waste management, and building systems—while overseeing contractors and technical partners.
• Before start-up: Consolidates best practices from other sites, enhances them with prior expertise, and ensures utilities and facilities are fully operational from day one.
• After start-up: Drives safe, reliable, and efficient utility performance to support uninterrupted production, regulatory compliance, and sustainability goals.
• Oversees all buildings and infrastructure, manages budgets, and serves as the key liaison between internal teams, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
Tasks
What you’ll be doing.
Before Start-up:
- Provide expert technical guidance on design, specifications, equipment selection, and installation to ensure best-in-class utility and facility systems.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive Readiness Checklist to replicate and enhance proven systems from other plants.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Project Management, Operations, Procurement, Office Management, and external partners to ensure optimal design and execution.
- Lead and actively contribute to design reviews (URS, P&ID, FDS, 3D models), ensuring alignment with safety, ergonomics, food safety, sustainability, and operational flow.
- Identify risks early and implement mitigation strategies to secure project success and operational readiness.
- Ensure full compliance with regulatory, safety, quality, and sustainability standards across all project phases (engineering, FAT, CQV, production trials).
- Drive continuous improvement and innovation to help build the “Plant of the Future.”
- Develop procedures aligned with McCain’s safety culture and build a high-performing Utilities & Facilities organization, including structure and capability development.
After Start-up:
- Lead daily utilities operations and maintenance to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient performance.
- Oversee facility infrastructure, including buildings, grounds, and critical site services.
- Define and execute long-term strategies for capacity, upgrades, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
- Ensure full regulatory compliance and lead safety audits, risk assessments, and emergency preparedness.
- Manage operational and capital budgets, optimize costs, and strengthen vendor partnerships.
- Lead and develop a high-performing technical team, fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
- Oversee utility and facility projects, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
- Drive energy management and sustainability initiatives, reducing consumption and environmental impact.
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to align utilities strategy with operational goals.
- Maintain accurate reporting and documentation while continuously improving reliability, efficiency, and sustainability through best practices and new technologies.
Requirements
What you’ll need to be successful.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in utilities and facilities management within industrial, manufacturing, or large-scale commercial environments.
- Strong technical expertise in utility systems (refrigeration, electrical, water/wastewater, HVAC, gas, steam, compressed air) and site infrastructure.
- Solid knowledge of German/EU regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental best practices.
- Proven leadership in team management, project execution, and budget control.
- Analytical and organized problem-solver with strong attention to detail and a safety-first mindset.
- Proficient in facility management systems, building automation, and Microsoft Office.
- Effective communicator able to engage and influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Fluent in German and English; additional languages such as French or Dutch are an asset.
