HOLOEYE Photonics is one of the leading suppliers of Spatial Light Modulators based on Liquid Crystal Microdisplays and of Diffractive Optical Elements for scientific and industrial applications. Our development, engineering and technical sales teams are based in Berlin Adlershof. Our international team of 40 colleagues supports research institutions and industrial customers worldwide by offering static diffractive microoptics and adaptive spatial light modulators. Holoeye offers both standard off-the shelf components and customized solutions according to customer requirements.

Use Case: HOLOEYE solutions are used worldwide, for example in the fields of laser beam-splitting and beam-shaping or structured light generation for applications like 3D sensing.

To strenghten our development team “Diffractive Optics" we are looking for a:

R&D Engineer Micro-Optics/Diffractive Optics (m/f/d) | Berlin-Adlershof | 20% Remote

Your Team: The team "Diffractive Optics" headed by Dr. Andreas Hermerschmidt consists of around 5 members who cover all the tasks regarding product specification. This includes costumer interaction, specification, design + simulation, data preparation for fabrication, vendor interaction and in-house optical lab testing.

Tech & Tool Stack

  • Design und Simulation: Self-developed proprietary software based on Python und C++ as well as commercial software (e.g. LightTrans Virtual Lab & Zemax)
  • Software development: Python, C++, MatLab & LabVIEW
  • AI Support: Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT
  • Optical function and surface characterization: Laser diffraction, Spectrometry, Image processing, Laser scanning microscopy / electron microscopy
  • Project Management: Atlassian JIRA
  • Documentation: Atlassian Confluence

Your Hiring Manager: Andreas Hermerschmidt is a physicist with a PhD in laser physics and diffractive optics. He believes in teamwork as well as in open and direct communication. He is keen to make things work for the customers, the Holoeye team and its external partners.

Tasks

  • You work on the design and simulation of optical micro- and nanostructures for optical elements with dedicated functions (e.g. diffractive optical elements & metalenses)
  • You assist in generating data for the fabrication of micro-optical and nano-optical structures
  • You will be responsible for analyzing test results from optical or surface characterization measurements to derive optimal process parameters for fabrication processes in the first and subsequent iterations.
  • Your onboarding goal in the first 6 months: Develop 2-4 designs of your own and after fabrication, check their performance for optimization options, thereby becoming familiar with the team and its workflows.

Optional or future tasks

  • You communicate with customers regarding development objectives, participate in and represent Holoeye at trade shows and scientific conferences.
  • You contribute to the qualification of manufacturing processes for micro- and nano-optical structures (such as laser or electron beam lithography, reactive plasma etching, nano-imprint, molding).
  • You conduct optical measurements to characterize optical micro- and nanostructures

Requirements

  • Education: University (or University of Applied Sciences) education with a degree in one the subjects: Physics, Microsystems Engineering, Computer Science / Programming, Optical Engineering
  • Domain Knowledge: Ideally in at least 2-3 of the following subjects: Fourier Optics, Rigorous diffraction simulation (e.g. RCWA, FDTD), Wave-optical propagation, / Metasurfaces , Lithography, Lasers, Optical systems
  • Programming skills: Python, ideally also in C++, MATLAB
  • Analytical Skills: High analytic skills for connecting simulation and experimental results and drawing the required conclusions for further optimizations.
  • Working method: Ability to work systematically, self-organized, but also team oriented and able to cope with changing demands
  • Language: Proficiency in English language, German language skills highly welcome
  • Mindset: intrinsic motivation and solution driven
