Researcher, Political Influencer Landscape (Germany) Media Ownership Monitor Germany 2025

The Researcher will support the extension of the Media Ownership Monitor (MOM) Germany project undertaking a research and mapping exercise to document and analyze the political influencer landscape in Germany. This initiative aims to create transparency about public discourse and opinion formation in the digital sphere. The researcher will investigate political influencers, document their interconnected networks and audience reach, and contribute to the development of a unique database cataloging influential political voices across Germany's diverse social media landscape.

The research phase begins in early June, with final results scheduled for publication on the project website by mid-November 2025. Residence in Berlin or the surrounding area is desirable, as regular in-person consultations are planned. Candidates must be available to participate in the first training session in Berlin on June 12, 2025.

Tasks

  • Research and analyze the German political influencer ecosystem, according to set methodology
  • Document content, funding sources, and relationships between news influencers and other stakeholders, map identified connections
  • Produce detailed profiles of at least 15 significant news influencers including their reach, messaging, and affiliations
  • Support MOM in developing visual representations of influence networks and information flows and the development of analytical articles on trends in the German political influencer landscape
  • Contribute to public awareness events and stakeholder briefings, as needed

Requirements

  • Proven journalistic research background, in particular, experience using publicly available resources like commercial registries or official documents
  • Excellent writing skills in German and professional fluency in English
  • Ability to navigate complex information networks and identify meaningful patterns, as well as to produce analytical content
  • Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, influencer culture, and communication strategies
  • Strong understanding of the German political landscape and digital political communication
  • Experience with social media analytics tools and data visualization techniques
  • Attention to detail and ability to organize complex information
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Background in media studies, journalism, (political) communications, or related field preferred
  • Experience with content management systems and database management is desirable
