We are seeking an innovative and detail-oriented Hardware Test Engineer to join our team, focusing on the reliability testing and characterization of silicon photonic circuits. The ideal candidate will work at the forefront of silicon photonics technology, participating in product qualifications, developing test hardware and methodologies ensuring the reliability of cutting-edge photonic devices. This role offers an opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams between R&D, lab operations, and the characterization of next-generation photonic solutions.

Tasks

Main tasks

  • Manage our existing setups for electrical testing of integrated photonic devices to ensure their reliability.
  • Develop solutions to increase the capabilities and capacity of our reliability test facilities.
  • Specify and design custom breakout boards to ensure flexible electrical connectivity across diverse test setups and their reconfigurability for various products.
  • Define, design and order custom PCB substrates for silicon chip assembly in close collaboration with Packaging team.
  • Execute functional and reliability (aging and robustness) tests, communicate their status, and ensure results quality and reproducibility.

Collaboration and support

  • Select, purchase, and install new test instruments / equipment.
  • Support testing operations by installing samples into test chambers, inspecting assembled photonic chips, and defining and executing calibration routines.
  • Support operations by assisting in lab upgrades, reporting issues, routine maintenance of lab equipment, and conducting periodic checks to ensure consistent testing quality.
  • Support automation and test method teams in debugging and implementing new electrical measurements in existing setups.
  • Support R&D engineers in the development and execution of qualification plans for Lumiphase's photonics devices and in implementing the required hardware and software adaptations of the accelerated aging test setups.

Requirements

Education

  • Technical education, Fachhochschule, university or applied university degree in Electrical engineering, Microsystems, Mechatronics, or similar field.
  • This position is suitable also for recent graduates or early-career engineers.

Experience and Technical skills

  • Python programming skills for developing new test routines, new instrument drivers and test sequence automation for tests execution and data collection.
  • Experience in the use of PCB design tools.
  • Hands-on attitude and passion for lab work.
  • Practical experience in working in the lab environment, using electronic test equipment, and designing lab setups is a plus.

Soft skills

  • Agile mindset to adapt to a dynamic deep-tech startup environment.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills in English (German is a plus).
  • Motivation to familiarize yourself with integrated photonics and with semiconductor reliability methods.

Our recruitment process consists of three stages:

  1. A 30 min. phone interview to discuss your general career motivations, and present our company and this role.
  2. A 1-1.5 hour phone interview with 1-2 members of the hiring team to deep dive into the core skills requirements.
  3. An on-site visit to interview with and meet many members of the team that you would be working in. This often includes lunch and gives you a strong sense of the company culture and individuals.
