The professorship for Digital City Science at HCU researches digital technologies for city and metropolitan development and applies them nationally and internationally. The international and interdisciplinary team develops data-based approaches for the analysis and planning of complex urban systems, bringing together expertise from architecture, urban and spatial planning, computer science and media technology. With an extensive partner network, groundbreaking tools are developed that are used in basic research as well as in concrete application projects and taught to students.

Research Associate (m/f/d) Web-Mapping / GIS Developer in the Projekt „ARTUR“

Pay group 13 TV-L at the earliest possible date to support research with 50% of the regular weekly working ti-me. The position is a fixed-term appointment until Nov. 30, 2024. Application deadline Thursday December 7th, 2023 - Central European Time.

## Tasks

Within the framework of a larger, GIZ-lead project package, the HCU-led sub-project „Ap-proaches Towards Urban Resilience in Ukraine” (ARTUR) aims to prepare fundamental methodological approaches and conceptual instruments for the enhancement of urban re-silience, thus preparing the creation of respective measures in Ukrainian cities in the longer run. The overall purpose and goals of the project can be summarized as follows:

• providing theoretical knowledge on urban resilience, with special regard to the ex-periences gained from the projects and activities in ISU II;

• screening the state-of-the-art approaches and models for measuring urban resili-ence with a special focus on digital tools and spatial data;

• creating a new model process (“Resilience checkup”) to include urban resilience measures in strategic development concepts (e.g. communal housing or infrastruc-ture planning);

• conceptualising and prototyping a digital decision support tool to enable rapid IUDC development, for monitoring and processing resilience indicators;

• carrying out pilot tests of the model process and the digital tool with selected Ukrainian cities and communities to validate and assess the suitability of the ap-proach;

• Developing human capacity by facilitating horizontal learning between cities, train-ing personnel, and connecting relevant knowledge resources for the new tools and approaches. 

Your main task is to build an interactive web-based application for resilience-oriented urban planning, which bundles the exchange of data sets between spatial modeling and simula-tion tools and derives insights for spatial planners and decision-makers. On the one hand, the tasks concern the integration of these tools into a common framework for data-based urban development and building a platform to link their inputs and outputs. On the other hand, it also includes the adaptation of an interactive frontend (based on the chair's TOS-CA framework) to enable urban planners and policymakers to interact with the implement-ed simulation and modelling tools.

## Requirements

*   a completed academic degree (Master or equivalent) in media design, computer sci-ence, geoinformatics or similar fields or
*   an academic degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in the above-mentioned sub-jects and four years of work experience in the relevant work areas of the va-cant position

You may also apply, when you have completed your Bachelor degree, but have not yet ob-tained the necessary four years of work experience. In this case the salary group will be 12 TV-L with the corresponding tasks and responsibilities.

**Additional requirements**

*   knowledge of OGC Standards
*   experience in UX/UI design
*   knowledge of CI/CD management using Rancher, Kubernetes, Drone
*   experience with urban modeling and simulation tools (URBANSIM or similar)
*   excellent (spatial) data visualization skills in web frontends (e.g. Leaflet, MapLibre, D3, Cesium or alternative frameworks)
*   experience developing progressive web applications (e.g. Vue)
*   good English language skills
