About First Momentum Ventures
We're engineers at heart and investors by choice. What started in 2019 as a campus spin-off has grown into one of Europe's leading pre-seed funds, backing 50+ deeply technical startups that reshape industries from new industrials to novel computing.
With our €35M+ second fund in full swing and Fund III on the horizon, we're hiring a Research Analyst to further expand our presence in the realm of Physical & Computational Biology.
Our aim is to be the #1 destination for deeply technical founders in Europe. We believe great teams create the future, and we're here to back them early and support them deeply. We aren't just capital providers; we invest in incredible individuals and view EQ as our greatest competitive advantage over traditional funds. The same applies to our own team: we win as a team (not individuals), believe in high agency & independence, and have every team member participate directly in the fund's economic upside.
The Role
As a Research Analyst you are responsible for our expansion into the world of physical & computational biology. You will work closely with the investment team to shape our investment thesis in this field and identify game-changing opportunities. You will independently research the field of biology, especially at the interface with the deeply physical and computational sciences. At the same time you will receive direct exposure to how the venture capital world truly operates.
This role is designed for 6-12 months, with the possibility to transform into a full time investment role after that.

Tasks

Drive lasting impact: Actively form our investment thesis in physical & computational biology.

Build a strong network for our portfolio: Identify key opinion leaders and build a network of experts from biotech & pharma companies as well as relevant research institutes. This will help us make the best possible investment decisions and give our portfolio companies direct access to key partners.

Lead deep-dive research: Investigate the intersection of biology & deep tech and support the investment team by sourcing promising start-ups that align with our strategy.

Gain full exposure to the investment process: Work side-by-side with our investment team through the entire deal flow, from first contact and due diligence to deal closing.

Requirements

PhD in biology, biotechnology or a related field. Ideally paired with expertise in computer science or engineering.

You have gained first practical experience in a fast-paced environment such as startups or engineering competitions.

You understand the role of data in biotech and you have a good idea about strategies for data collection and utilisation.

You work with extreme ownership and high agency, spotting opportunities, designing a plan, and executing without waiting for permission.

You communicate clearly and convincingly in both German and English, whether you're pitching an idea to the team or speaking to key opinion leaders.

Not mandatory but a plus: You understand the inner workings of biotech and pharma companies including regulatory pathways.

Benefits

Real ownership, not busy work: You'll make independent decisions and your research will ultimately form our investment thesis in the field of physical & computational biology.

Technical depth you won't find elsewhere: Most of our team are engineers and scientists, which lets you develop a genuine understanding of breakthrough technologies, not just assessment skills.

Exceptional colleagues who challenge you: Work alongside a team that values rigorous debate, mutual support, and winning together. You'll become part of the First Momentum family, even beyond your time with us.

Full flexibility with a remote-first culture balanced by regular in-person gatherings across Europe.

Competitive pay: The compensation package will be adjusted to your professional experience and will be well above an internship salary.

The perfect launchpad for your next move: Whether you're heading toward a full-time VC role, a Chief of Staff position in our portfolio, or eventually starting your own venture, this position sets you up for what's next.
