👋 Welcome to dexter health!
At dexter health, we build AI-powered software for care teams. Our mission is to reduce administrative workload in healthcare so caregivers can spend more time with patients.
We are looking for a high-agency Backend Python Engineer to help us improve and scale the backend systems behind our products. The role focuses on Python, databases, external APIs, cloud infrastructure, testing, validation, and production reliability.
You will work on backend systems that connect dexter health with third-party healthcare software providers. These systems synchronize and validate operational data used in real care workflows.
External APIs are inconsistent, data models are messy, and edge cases are common. We need someone who is fast, sharp, and ownership-driven: someone who reads unfamiliar code, debugs production issues, finds root causes, and ships robust fixes quickly without waiting for detailed instructions.
This is a shared-ownership role, not a ticket-taking role. You will work closely with the existing team, but we expect you to take real responsibility for improving backend stability and delivery speed.
You will work daily with AI development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, or similar. We expect you to use these tools seriously, not casually.
<h2>Tasks</h2>
As our Python Backend Engineer, you will:
<ul>
<li>Develop and maintain backend systems written in Python</li>
<li>Work heavily with databases, data models, and external APIs</li>
<li>Build and improve integrations with third-party healthcare software providers</li>
<li>Work with REST APIs, authentication, webhooks, pagination, retries, rate limits, and edge cases</li>
<li>Maintain data transformation, validation, and synchronization logic</li>
<li>Debug production issues, data inconsistencies, sync failures, and API problems</li>
<li>Improve testing, validation, monitoring, health checks, and failure handling</li>
<li>Work with cloud technologies such as GCP, AWS, Azure, or comparable platforms</li>
<li>Work with serverless functions, background jobs, schedulers, async workflows, or similar backend infrastructure</li>
<li>Use AI development tools as a core part of your daily workflow</li>
<li>Write clean, maintainable, testable backend code</li>
</ul>
<h2>Requirements</h2>
We care less about formal seniority and more about speed, intelligence, ownership, and reliability. We like people who operate with founder-like urgency: they figure things out, make progress under ambiguity, and care about outcomes more than titles.
Must-have
<ul>
<li>Strong Python backend experience in production environments</li>
<li>Experience with databases, data models, and API integrations</li>
<li>Solid understanding of REST APIs, authentication, retries, rate limits, and error handling</li>
<li>Experience with cloud technologies such as GCP, AWS, Azure, or similar</li>
<li>Experience with background jobs, schedulers, serverless functions, async workflows, or comparable backend infrastructure</li>
<li>Strong debugging instincts across logs, cloud services, databases, and external APIs</li>
<li>Experience writing tests and validating backend behavior before shipping</li>
<li>Ability to work with typed Python, structured data models, and validation frameworks</li>
<li>Serious experience using AI development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, or similar</li>
<li>High intelligence, fast learning speed, bias to action, and ownership mindset</li>
<li>Comfortable with ambiguity, fast decisions, and a high-trust startup environment</li>
<li>Clear written and spoken English</li>
</ul>
Nice-to-have
<ul>
<li>Experience with healthcare software, healthcare data, or integration middleware</li>
<li>Experience with async Python and concurrent API calls</li>
<li>Familiarity with GraphQL clients</li>
<li>Experience with document databases, NoSQL systems, or event-driven backend systems</li>
<li>Experience with Docker, CI/CD, secrets management, or observability tooling</li>
<li>Experience working around AI features in production systems</li>
<li>German language skills</li>
<li>Knowledge of nursing homes or elderly care workflows</li>
</ul>
This role is probably not for you if
<ul>
<li>You need detailed specifications before making progress</li>
<li>You prefer slow, highly structured corporate environments</li>
<li>You are mainly looking for management, not hands-on building</li>
<li>You dislike debugging messy APIs and production edge cases</li>
<li>You want to use AI tools only occasionally instead of as part of your daily workflow</li>
<li>You optimize for perfect process over fast, reliable execution</li>
</ul>
<h2>Benefits</h2>
<ul>
<li>Remote work</li>
<li>Fair compensation based on skills, experience, and location</li>
<li>Ownership of important backend systems</li>
<li>Work on software used in real healthcare workflows</li>
<li>Modern AI-native development workflow</li>
<li>Room to grow with the company</li>
</ul>
Why?
Caregivers spend too much time on documentation, coordination, and administrative work. We build technology that reduces this burden.
Reliable backend systems are the foundation for everything we build. If our integrations, databases, and APIs work well, our product can create real value for care teams.
If you want to work on complex backend systems with real-world impact, move fast, use AI tools every day, and take real ownership, we would like to hear from you.
