Spot the difference

Writing a job ad takes time and effort, especially if you’re writing about a role that you’re not that familiar with yourself. For example, how is a Paralegal different from a Legal Secretary? What other responsibilities do Legal Advisors, Risk Managers, and GDPR Data Protection Officers have? By knowing more about the role you’re creating a job ad for you have a better chance of attracting the best talent for your job.

In short, a Paralegal helps lawyers prepare for trial while Legal Secretaries help with administrative tasks. Risk Managers reduce business risk, GDPR Data Protection Officers ensure data protection compliance, Legal Advisors give companies general legal support.

  • Paralegals assist lawyers in the direct preparation for court cases and trials. Conducting legal research, preparing legal documents, and meeting with legal professionals related to the trial are all responsibilities of a Paralegal.
  • A Legal Secretary also supports a lawyer but the nature of their work is more administrative. Handling phone calls, transcribing recordings, and scheduling appointments are some of the responsibilities of a Legal Secretary.
  • Legal Advisors tend to work for companies rather than lawyers. They provide support with legal matters, such as harassment suits or creating contracts.
  • A Risk Manager assesses the potential risk within a business (e.g. business or financial, but this can also be a legal risk) and implements strategies and measures to reduce these risks.
  • GDPR Data Protection Officers are specifically tasked with ensuring the company complies with data protection regulations as set out in the GDPR and/or similar regulations.

  • You should be more focused on your company culture and what your mission is, instead of their daily tasks.
