Spot the difference

Writing job ads is hard work, especially now we’re living within such a fast paced and exponential society. What’s the difference between an Auditor and a Controller, anyway? Don’t a Financial Advisor and a Financial Analyst do practically the same tasks? Getting your job ad wrong can cost you a lot of time and effort in the long run, make sure you get it right.

In short, an Auditor is responsible for the bookkeeping, a Controller looks after the general finances of a company, while a Tax Advisor is fairly straightforward - they keep your taxes in check. The difference between a Financial Accountant and an Analyst is that an Analyst generally does most of the research and looks towards the future while an Accountant focuses on past finances and improving those.

  • An Auditor is responsible for the bookkeeping across the entire company including financial statements, documents and data. They analyse reporting systems, account balances, balance sheets and more.  
  • The Controller looks after the general finances of a company. They’re responsible for processes, payroll, inventory and compliance. 
  • While a Tax Advisor is fairly straightforward - they keep your taxes in check. 
  • A Financial Accountant focuses on past finances and improving those, they’re the trackers of your finances. They also report to management about any discrepancies.  
  • The Analyst generally does most of the research and looks towards the future, they look after all your investments.

  • Be clear in your description. Know the tasks of the role and ideally who the candidate should be.
  • This means you won’t need to read through too many CVs to find your superstar.
  • You might be tempted to use bullet points in this section, but resist the urge! Tell a story, show off all the cool things they would be responsible for, and get them excited to apply.
  • You should be more focused on your company culture and what your mission is, instead of their daily tasks.

· Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
· Conduct internal audits.
· Oversee all tax payments.
· Prepare budgets for the organisation.
· Monitor and report on any inconsistencies or weaknesses you find in regards to finance within the company and strive to improve these.
· Respond to financial inquiries by gathering, analysing, summarising and interpreting data.
· Prepare special reports, prepare budgets and develop forecasts.
· Help guide the company towards a secure and profitable financial position.

· Degree in Finance or a related field.
· 2+ years experience in Financial Advising, preferably within a fast paced and ever changing start-up environment.
· Up-to-date certifications of CISI, DipFA, CII, FCA or the equivalent.
· Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills with the ability to explain complex details clearly to many different teams.
· The ability to operate complex database systems.
· Outstanding attention to detail.
· A solid understanding of bookkeeping competencies with the ability to stay confidential.
· Fluency in English is a must, all other language skills are a bonus.
