Working Student - Site Reliability Engineering

We are looking for a working student curious in learning and supporting in our infrastructure team to keep JustWatch reliable and performant.

We provide you a space to develop by working with the best people in the industry and be a central part of our growing team. You will have a lot of autonomy, with in-depth mentorship where needed. Why not learn Kubernetes from someone who actually was programming core parts of it?

You will be able to actually ship things that have an impact to the company and that will be used every day. Our promise: You will never work on any “dummy projects” which are abandoned the moment they are done.

Our Stack
We are working with Infrastructure as Code whereever possible. Our microservice architecture is hosted on Kubernetes, and we manage the bits and piece around it in Google Cloud with Terraform (or to be accurate: Terragrunt).
For the glue-code to keep things running smoothly and enrich our developer experience we are coding Golang on a semi-daily basis.

Our team members' traits
Curiosity, drive and passion are shared characteristics of all people at JustWatch, and we are looking for these values in every person we are hiring. We only want people who are willing to constantly learn through challenging themselves and others. All of us also love to get things done and strongly believe that “done is better than perfect”.

Here's what you'll do

  • Develop software (in Golang) to ensure our continuous daily deployments to the production system continue smoothly and security boundaries between teams are kept
  • Manage our cloud infrastructure using Kubernetes and Terraform
  • Join the team to be first in line to help if things turn south. This situation can be stressful, but believe us, you’ve never learned more
  • Spend about a fifth of your time doing direct tech support for the wider company. (Everyone around is quite technical, so you will not experience any “What is this Internet Explorer you folks are talking about?”-Questions)

What you'll need

  • First and foremost, it is fine if you don't know everything from the get go, as long as you are passionate about learning and hacking on problems on your own. Curiosity is the core ingredient we are looking for. At JustWatch you will be able to find out what you enjoy most and develop into the role that fits you best.
  • Foundation in software engineering (we mainly use Golang, but a C(++|#)* background is cool as well)
  • Basic knowledge in web technologies and networking
  • Some experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure as code (Terraform)
  • Experience with GNU/Linux
  • Know your way around the networking ISO/OSI model

Additionally, we have the following hard requirements:

  • Fluent in English
  • Currently enrolled at a German university

We have started to slowly get back to our new offices at the historic Backfabrik, where we will work in a hybrid mode. If you do not live in Berlin, we provide relocation and visa support but are not a remote-only company.

We embrace our entrepreneurial responsibilities. Through our 6-figure environmental and social impact budget, we offset every employee’s carbon footprint, give back to the community, support causes that matter, and have recently implemented a well-being and mental health program.
