The key is a blend of humanity and technology. More than 60,000 lessons across 14 languages are hand-crafted by 180+ linguists, with user behaviours continuously analysed to shape and tweak the learner experience. And it works: Studies with Yale University, City University of New York and Michigan State University prove its effectiveness. From headquarters in Berlin and New York, 750 people from more than 65 nationalities represent all the differences that make humans unique. We are looking for a Data Scientist to join us in Berlin!

You will join Babbel’s Data Solutions team, a machine learning focused group of data scientists. With support from our data- and ML engineering team, you research, prototype, implement and deploy smart and personalised product features driven by data, algorithms and, of course, machine learning. Your models and algorithms make Babbel a smarter product that adapts to the needs and interests of individual users and guides them through the learning experience. You and the team work across all customer touchpoints, from the earliest marketing funnel, to the core Babbel app on web and mobile, down to CRM.

As Data Scientist – Machine Learning , your work along the full machine learning lifecycle – starting with data exploration and preparation, continuing with feature engineering, model selection and parameter tuning, down to implementation, impact evaluation and monitoring of live models. Babbel is a learning company inside out. You are expected to stay on top of relevant developments in the field, and acquire algorithms and techniques from research literature.

You have:

  • Master's degree in computer science, math, physics, engineering or related math heavy fields. 2+ years industry experience applying machine learning, or PhD in such a field with 3+ years of applied machine learning experience.
  • Strong mathematical foundation. Skills and curiosity to learn and assess new algorithms and methods based on research literature and graduate level textbooks.
  • Strong hands-on programming and data mangling experience with modern Python (data classes, type annotations, generators, etc). Familiarity with the Python data, machine learning and scientific computing stack.
  • Significant experience in applied data science and ML across all lifecycle stages from model prototyping to deployment, paired with a pragmatic hands-on problem solving attitude. We care about your understanding of general principles more than your familiarity with specific tools or libraries.

You could also have:

  • Familiarity with modern SQL and data technologies, such as Snowflake.
  • Familiarity with software engineering practices and technologies, such as containers, testing, git, Airflow. Some exposure to AWS, e.g. AWS Batch, Sagemaker, Kinesis.
  • History of contributing production grade components to complex software systems.
  • Experience with data analysis and optimisation in a Bayesian framework. Solid understanding of statistics.

Why Babbel?

  • A steep learning-curve – personally and professionally
  • A challenging environment and a lot of responsibility to prove your skills
  • A lively startup atmosphere with flexible working hours
  • A vibrant international company with people from over 65 different nationalities
  • Great company benefits (30 vacation days, Sabbatical, a BVG ticket or a Swapfiets bike)

Diversity at Babbel

Babbel is committed to providing a work culture of belonging where every Babbelonian can contribute, participate and learn. Striving to become a truly diverse, inclusive, and equitable company is reflected in our internal policies, such as flexible working hours, the options to work from home, as well as a nap, family, and faith rooms in our headquarter office. At the same time, we acknowledge that creating a culture of belonging is a continuous journey that includes every current and future Babbelonian.
